SAP ABAP core training

Build a strong SAP ABAP foundation with core development skills

Learn ABAP programming, Data Dictionary, internal tables, modularization, debugging, reports, ALV, dialog programming and forms. This is the first course in the two-part ABAP path.

Course overview

Learn the core ABAP skills used in everyday SAP development

This course covers the foundation of ABAP development: the workbench, language syntax, Data Dictionary objects, internal tables, reusable modularization, debugging and classic output technologies. It is designed for learners who need a structured, practical start.

Every topic is reinforced with coding exercises. You will build development objects, read and format data, create reports and screens, and work through common debugging scenarios before completing a guided core project.

Core course focus

  • ABAP workbench, packages, transports and program types.
  • Data Dictionary objects, internal tables and modularization.
  • Reports, selection screens, ALV, dialog screens and forms.
  • Debugging, runtime analysis and clean coding fundamentals.
Training environment: Practical work uses a suitable SAP ABAP training environment where available. Access, release level and sample data are confirmed before the batch begins.

Learning outcomes

What you should be able to do

Write ABAP programs

Use data types, control flow, internal tables and reusable modularization confidently.

Create DDIC objects

Define tables, structures, data elements, domains, views and search helps.

Build reports

Develop selection screens, classical reports, interactive reports and ALV outputs.

Develop screens

Create dialog screens with PBO/PAI logic, validation and navigation.

Produce forms

Explain and build print outputs using Smart Forms or Adobe Forms concepts.

Troubleshoot code

Use the debugger and runtime analysis to diagnose common ABAP issues.

Practical work

Exercises and core project

Learners build and test development objects rather than only watching demonstrations.

  • Create packages and transport requests for development objects.
  • Build DDIC tables and a table maintenance utility.
  • Write programs using internal tables and modularization.
  • Develop a report with selection screen and ALV output.
  • Create a dialog screen with validation and PBO/PAI logic.
  • Design a Smart Form or Adobe Form output scenario.
  • Debug an intentionally broken program and document the fix.
  • Complete a guided core project with code review and testing.
Next step: After core ABAP, continue with the Advanced ABAP course for object-oriented programming, enhancements, interfaces, CDS, OData, RAP and S/4HANA readiness.
Enrolment questions

SAP ABAP core training FAQ

Is this course suitable for freshers?
Yes. The core course starts with programming fundamentals and ABAP basics. Basic programming logic and computer literacy help, but prior ABAP experience is not required.
Is this the same as the advanced ABAP course?
No. This is a separate core course focused on ABAP fundamentals, Data Dictionary, internal tables, reports, dialogs and forms. The Advanced ABAP course covers object-oriented ABAP, enhancements, interfaces, CDS, OData, RAP and S/4HANA readiness.
Do I need access to an SAP system for practice?
Practical work uses a suitable SAP ABAP training environment where available. If system access is limited for a batch, trainer-led demonstrations and guided code walkthroughs are used. Access details are confirmed before the batch starts.
Is this a functional or technical course?
This is a technical development course. It focuses on ABAP programming, development objects, debugging and core output technologies. Functional business-process depth is covered separately in the SAP S/4HANA and SAP Business One programs.
Does this include certification?
The program includes preparation support for relevant certification topics where applicable. We are not an official certification body, and official exams are booked separately with SAP.
Can this be delivered for a corporate development team?
Yes. Corporate programs can focus on core ABAP fundamentals, reporting, dialog programming or a tailored development stack. Delivery is available online or onsite.
